Red-footed Baby Tortoise
Red-footed Baby Tortoise – A Classic Tropical Explorer
The Red-footed Tortoise (Chelonoidis carbonarius) is a beloved staple of the reptile world, prized for its striking appearance and engaging personality. Native to the tropical forests and savannas of South America, these tortoises are easily identified by the beautiful red and orange scales on their limbs and the bright yellow or honey-colored markings on their shell scutes. Our Red-footed Babies are captive-bred to ensure they are healthy, hydrated, and ready to become a long-term part of your family.
Unlike their desert cousins, Red-footed tortoises are forest dwellers that enjoy a more humid environment, making them an excellent choice for keepers who love creating lush, tropical enclosures.
Key Features of the Red-footed Tortoise
Vibrant Contrast: The deep black shell provides a stunning backdrop for the fiery red markings on their legs and head, a color palette that only becomes more impressive as they grow.
Highly Personable: Many keepers consider Red-foots to be the "dogs of the tortoise world." They are famously outgoing, curious, and often develop a strong recognition of their keepers.
Manageable Size: Reaching an average adult length of 30-40 cm (12-16 inches), they are a medium-sized species that is easy to accommodate in both indoor and outdoor habitats depending on your climate.
Omnivorous Diet: One of the few tortoise species that naturally consumes fruit and occasional protein in addition to greens, allowing for a fun and varied feeding schedule.
A Prehistoric Companion for a Lifetime
With a lifespan that can easily exceed 50 years, a Red-footed tortoise is not just a pet—it is a lifelong companion. Their adaptability and gentle nature make them one of the most rewarding chelonians to raise from a hatchling.

Expert Care Tips for Hatchlings
Mastering Humidity: To ensure your baby grows a perfectly smooth, "non-pyramided" shell, humidity is non-negotiable. Maintain a level of 70% to 85% by using moisture-retentive substrates and providing a "humid hide" filled with damp sphagnum moss.
The Importance of Soaking: Hatchlings can dehydrate quickly. We recommend lukewarm soaks 3 to 4 times a week for about 15 minutes. This not only keeps them hydrated but also encourages them to clear their bowels and stay active.
