Crested Gecko (Captive Bred) – The Ultimate "Starter" Pet

Overview

Once thought to be extinct until their rediscovery in 1994, the Crested Gecko has skyrocketed in popularity to become one of the most beloved pet lizards in the world. Often called the "Eyelash Gecko" due to the beautiful fringed scales that run from their eyes down their backs, these arboreal wonders are famous for their soft, velvet-like skin and incredibly docile nature.

If you are looking for a pet that is low-maintenance, handleable, and visually captivating, the Crested Gecko is the perfect choice for your household.

Why the Crested Gecko is the Perfect Pet

  • Room Temperature Living: Unlike most reptiles, they thrive at standard room temperatures—no expensive or complex heating lamps are required in most homes.

  • The "Eyelash" Look: Their unique crests give them a prehistoric yet adorable appearance that is unlike any other lizard.

  • Incredible Grip: Equipped with specialized toe pads and a prehensile tail, they can walk up glass and jump between branches with amazing agility.

  • Sweet Disposition: They are generally very calm and rarely bite, making them excellent companions for supervised children and first-time keepers.

Retail Care Essentials

1. A Tropical Treehouse

Crested Geckos love to climb! They need a habitat that prioritizes height over floor space.

  • Enclosure: A vertical glass terrarium (at least 12x12x18 inches for a juvenile, or 18x18x24 for an adult) is ideal.

  • Climate: Keep them between 72°F and 78°F. Avoid temperatures above 82°F, as they are sensitive to heat.

  • Humidity: They require a humidity level of 60%–80%. A heavy misting of the enclosure at night and a light misting in the morning will keep them hydrated and assist with shedding.

  • Decor: Provide plenty of vertical hiding spots using cork bark, vines, and live or silk plants.

2. Effortless Nutrition

One of the best things about Crested Geckos is their diet.

  • Primary Food: They eat a complete powdered diet (like Pangea or Repashy). Just mix it with water to a ketchup-like consistency and place it in a feeding ledge.

  • Insects: While not strictly necessary if using a complete powder, offering calcium-dusted crickets once a week is great for enrichment and growth.

  • Water: They usually drink water droplets off the leaves in their tank after misting, but a small water dish should always be available.
