Chinese Cave Gecko Morph (Captive Bred) – The Shadow Dragon of the East

Overview

The Chinese Cave Gecko is one of the most visually arresting species in the reptile hobby. With their slender bodies, mesmerizing red or orange eyes, and velvet-textured skin patterned with bold yellow or purple bands, they look like miniature dragons plucked from a prehistoric cavern.

Unlike many desert-dwelling geckos, these stunning animals thrive in cooler, shaded environments. For the keeper who appreciates a beautifully terrarium-scaped "bioactive" setup and a pet with an exotic, mysterious aura, the Chinese Cave Gecko is a premier choice.

Why the Chinese Cave Gecko Stands Out

  • Striking Appearance: Featuring dark, ebony-to-charcoal base colors contrasted by vibrant bands and piercing, jewel-like eyes.

  • Unique Habitat: They prefer cooler temperatures, making them ideal for homes that don't want to manage intense heat lamps.

  • Fascinating Behavior: While shy, they are incredible to observe at night as they elegantly hunt and navigate their rocky "cave" environments.

  • Captive-Bred Quality: Our morphs are bred in-house to ensure they are hardy, healthy, and accustomed to terrarium life.

Retail Care Essentials

1. Creating a Limestone Sanctuary

The key to a happy Cave Gecko is mimicking the cool, humid rock crevices of their native Southern China and Vietnam.

  • Enclosure: A 20-gallon long terrarium is perfect for an adult. They appreciate floor space with plenty of climbing rocks and crevices.

  • Temperature: Crucial: These geckos like it cool. Maintain temperatures between 68°F and 75°F. Temperatures above 80°F can be dangerous and stressful for them.

  • Humidity: They require high humidity (70%–80%). Daily misting and a moisture-retaining substrate like coconut husk or cypress mulch are essential.

  • Decor: Provide plenty of "caves." Use cork bark, slate rock stacks, and live mosses to create a dark, humid retreat.

2. Nutrition & Hydration

  • Diet: They are enthusiastic hunters of live insects. Offer a variety of gut-loaded crickets and small roaches.

  • Supplements: Dust prey with Calcium (with D3) and multivitamins. Even though they are nocturnal, D3 is important for their metabolic health.

  • Water: Always provide a clean, shallow water dish. They will also drink droplets from the walls after misting.
